Liberty Theatre to Reopen in March

Camas, Wash. (January 20, 2011) Downtown Camas has a ‘new movie theater operator’ and tenant for the Liberty Theatre which is scheduled to reopen in March. Greg L. Goforth, commercial real estate broker with Coldwell Banker Commercial, Jenkins-Bernhardt & Associates,represented the owners and landlords of the Liberty Theater, Gary and Marilyn Webberley, and the new Liberty Theatre operator, Rootstock Capital Management LLC – Rand Thornsley, for this partnership.

Opening the doors of the historic Liberty Theater is a big win for Downtown Camas and local merchants, helping push the downtown as a ‘destination’ for the entire community and surrounding areas. “The Liberty has always been at the heart of our Downtown with theater goers taking advantage of the many great restaurants, merchants and services we have here in Camas. We are very excited and welcome this catalyst to Downtown’s revitalization,” commented Carolyn Mercury, Downtown Camas Association President.

The new Liberty Theater tenants are made up of Rand Thornsley, Managing Director, Adam Thornsley and Paul Rogers, a partner in Rogers Cinemas of Wisconsin. Between the three they have a vast experience in the motion picture exhibition business. The relationship between the broker, land lords and operator is the culmination of three months work, “I am so glad to finally have all of the pieces to the puzzle completed”, Goforth says “One of the longer and more complicated transactions than ever imagined but finally puts this experienced ‘motion picture’ operator and manager in control of his own operation for many years to come!”

Thornsley is known in business circles for his niche and grassroots marketing concepts that partners with local organizations to put on special event screenings in a cooperative nature. He and Rogers both serve on the advisory board of the National Association of Theatre Owners. Thornsley is also currently the President of the Anchorage International Film Festival in Anchorage, Alaska.

“We intend to be very involved in the Camas and Washougal communities”, Thornsley said. While Thornsley will divide his time over the next year between Anchorage and Camas, the goal is to have a large and committed involvement in the local community.

The Liberty Theater will host its first community fundraising event on March 19^th. The event will feature local music and proceeds will go to support the Downtown Camas Association and Camas Public School’s music programs.

Critics of Sean Guard Fall Flat!

We just got email confirmation from someone attending the Washougal City Council Meeting tonight....He observed the whole meeting and not a word out of the public about Sean Guard's run-in with the law. The citizen reported that the only comment made about the episode was from Councilman Delevar (sp). It's time to move on people. Next Topic Please.

Just so you are not surprised tonight or tomorrow, I am told that there may be a news story about a traffic stop that I was involved in while in a city vehicle.

On Christmas Eve I was taking a needy family (mother and two children) home from a Christmas present shopping trip. While on I-5, I was behind a vehicle in the left, inside lane of three lanes. The vehicle ahead was going under the speed limit with room to the right to move over. I flashed my high beams at the vehicle 2-3 times in an attempt to get them to move out of the passing lane. At the time there was also a WSP trooper behind me who saw me flash the vehicle ahead of me and subsequently pulled me over. When the trooper saw that the vehicle was a city vehicle and still has a radio/light/siren console, he asked if it was in fact a police vehicle. I replied that I believed that it is still officially part of the police department fleet and explained my involvement with the city and that the vehicle is assigned to me.

The rumor is now out there that I was using the “emergency lights” on the vehicle to move slower traffic out of the way.

Just so everyone is aware, the vehicle I am assigned from the City does not have “emergency lights” or a siren or a radio. All of those devices were either taken out or disabled before it was assigned to me. The only functioning part that still exists is emergency flashers that are built into the tail light assembly in the rear of the vehicle.

My apologies to you that Washougal will likely end up in a news story, especially since it was me that landed us there. My goal has been to keep us OUT of the papers, except for good news articles.

I appreciate all of you and the job that you are doing for our city.

Have you ever been outside on a warm summer night and heard the crickets chirping? The lazy sound of chirping crickets is the same sound being heard from the Camas-Washougal Post Record. The story on Mayor Sean Guard broke on Monday and the Post Record did not print it in Tuesday's paper. They still haven't posted anything on their website as of Wednesday, December 29th. Another Washougal Mayor Scandal?

Ok, We are sure you have heard about Washougal Mayor Sean Guard's run-in with the law.

We have a few questions, because the story is a little bizzare.

1.) Why was the Mayor traveling alone with a female adult and two children? (Columbian) We get the whole charity thing, but was the woman in the vehicle his wife or not?

We are not saying that the Mayor was doing anything scandalous by being with another woman in the car. But let's say Mr. & Mrs. Guard were driving two children to Lakewood; How did the Children get down to Clark County in the first place? Were they picked up by the Guards in Lakewood using the same car? This is very confusing.

2.) Why did the Mayor use a taxpayer vehicle for his trip to Lakewood instead of his own vehicle?

We believe Sean is innocent until proven guilty, but these are some questions that are bugging us about this whole story.

Walstra Plans to Leave Port

The remaining remnant of the RiverWalk debacle, Scot Walstra in leaving the Port after three and a half years serving as Business Development Director. Scot is a nice guy, unfortunately he was hired at the beginning of a turbulent time that brought a head to Port commissioner corruption, ending in the ouster of two commissioners during the 2009 election. After the new commissioners took over, the Port attorney, who orchestrated much of the Port shenanigans, left in early 2010.Scot was hired in anticipation of the Riverwalk project moving forward and stayed on thereafter. It is our hope that the Commissioners save the taxpayers the six figures they spent on this position and put the money to better use.

Voters should reject Initiative 1098

he first of two planned Fisher Investments office towers has started rising out of the ground in west Camas. But executive Ken Fisher said Friday he would not move his company of 1,155 employees to Clark County unless Washington’s voters soundly reject Initiative 1098, a state ballot measure that would tax the incomes of people who earn $200,000 or more.

Fisher, 59, has hinted for three years that the $30 million Camas complex could be his company’s next corporate headquarters. Camas is in the running against sites in income-tax-free states Texas and Florida. But Washington will be out of the mix if Initiative 1098 is enacted, said Fisher, chairman and chief executive officer of Woodside, Calif.-based Fisher Investments, which manages assets and accounts for high-net-worth individuals and institutions — those with at least $500,000 in investments.

“If 1098 gets within 5 percent of passing there is no way under God’s little green apples Washington will ever be our corporate headquarters and likely (Camas) will never see another building,” Fisher, 59, said in an e-mail.

Washougal City Council to Consider a Resolution Banning Red-Light Cameras in City Limits

This resolution will be brought forward by Councilman Michael Delavar:

Michael states:

“With this resolution, the City of Washougal is sending the message that we reject the propagation of cameras everywhere. The Police Officers of the City of Washougal do a fine job keeping law and order on the streets of our city. The last thing we need is animosity between the citizens and law enforcement that would be brought about with photo enforcement cameras. With this resolution, we are saying ‘No’ to big brother.”

Imagine receiving a fine in your mailbox for running a red light on the corner of Washougal River Road & E St. This ticket was not written by a police officer, but rather a camera/computer with no understanding of traffic patterns and driving scenarios.

In the 2011 budget, the City of Washougal is proposing to hire a full-time traffic officer to enforce the laws of the road. This move would be very beneficial to our city and further makes the case for passing a ban on red light cameras.

Since this is a resolution and not an ordinance, it can be formally repealed by any future council if they deem camera enforcement necessary.

I encourage all interested people to attend our next Council meeting on Monday the 18^th of October at City Hall located at 1701 C St in Washougal at 7pm. Speak in favor or against, but please speak up..

Mr. Delavar’s resolution will most likely be brought forward during Council Comments.
