CW Aviation Assoc. Announces Dates for Summer Aviation Camp
March 16, 2010
Youth from the Camas and Washougal area are invited to attend a Summer Aviation Camp at Grove Field. The first camp for children ages 10 to 14 will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 22nd through Saturday, June 26. The second camp is for ages 15 and older on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, June 29, July 1 and July 3 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Grove Field is located 1 mile northeast of Camas.
Both age group camps are designed for the aspiring young aviator who wants to learn about flying and aerodynamics. Students will learn to fly a variety of aircraft using Microsoft's Flight Simulator software. They will practice basic flight maneuvers and then fly a series of missions with increasingly difficult requirements.
Younger students receive hands-on experience building small flying objects from a variety of materials. The purpose of this exercise is to teach the basics of aerodynamics. Students learn how to minimize weight as well as achieve balance and stability. Young students will also take field trips during the week. They will fly gas-powered radio-controlled model airplanes.
On the last day of summer camp, volunteer CWAA pilots will take the students up in the air on an actual flight. Each student will be given the chance to handle the controls and fly the plane.
Registration fee is $ 300 per camper. The last day to register for the CWAA Summer Aviation Camp is June 1, 2010. Registration applications are available on line at www.CWAAGroveField.com, at the Camas Washougal Chamber of Commerce office, at the Port of Camas Washougal office and at the Camas Public Library. For more information about the aviation camp, contact Chief Instructor Lincoln Westdal at Tel. (360) 833-9792.
The Camas Washougal Aviation Association is a 501c3 organization. It's mission is to support aviation in the community and raise awareness of the important role of Grove Field and its general aviation activities. CWAA raises money each year through various fundraising activities including the annual Grove Field Open House over Camas Days weekend and at Summer Concerts at Marina Park. Funds are used to award scholarships to college bound students from Camas and Washougal seeking professional careers in aviation. CWAA maintains two miles of SR-500 in partnership with the Washington State Department of Transportation Highway clean up program. Currently, CWAA has more than 50 family members and meets on the third Thursday of each month in the community room at the East County Fire Station next to Grove Field. For more information about CWAA, contact Bob Martilla, CWAA President, at (360) 566-0156.
